Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the most widely known and highly respected forms of alternative therapy which is available today. It originates from China, and although it dates back thousands of years, it has also been recorded as being used for hundreds of years in Europe, and is currently used in many parts of the NHS, although access to it is extremely limited. During the last century its use began to spread rapidly across many parts of the world, particularly across western Europe, The United States and Canada, as it has begun to be more and more recognised by health professionals as an extremely effective form of therapy.
Acupuncture involves the use of very fine needles which are inserted into the body at very specific points in order to bring about relief from pain, and to act as a preventative for a range of conditions. The ‘WHO’ (World Health Organization) has stated that acupuncture is effective for treating a list of 28 conditions ( both physical and physiological ), while evidence indicates it may have an effective therapeutic value for many more
The needles which are used are extremely thin, about as thick as two strands of human hair, and a few centimetres long. When the needles are inserted into the body they stimulate the production of the body’s own natural substances such as pain-relieving endorphins. During the procedure the needles may be rotated or manipulated by the acupuncturist to stimulate and increase their efficacy.
The places where needles are inserted on the body are determined by the acupuncturists knowledge of the ‘meridians’ ( pathways ) along which the bodies energies flow. When their is an imbalance of these energy flows the result is often illness and pain.
Those who undergo acupuncture therapy usually report no pain or side effects from their treatment, though there is usually a small sensation of tingling which is normally felt as the needles are inserted. To achieve the most beneficial effects of acupuncture, and for it to be of real long term benefit it is necessary to undertake a course of treatments, rather than one single session.
The acupuncture needles which are used are PRE STERILISED, SINGLE USE, and are DISPOSED of hygienically and safely immediately after use.
